Four Types of High-Tech Managers (And What Motivates Them)

Each of the following managers has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. The positive side is more productive and flexible, while the negative side is more defensive and rigid. You will gain some motivational insights if you identify yourself as one or more of these types.

Type #1: Craftspeople

Craftspeople value making, building and designing high-quality computer systems. They tend to be responsible, work-oriented, self-contained and prudently conservative. Craftspeople fit easily into a system of masters and apprentices. As leaders, they tend toward perfectionism. They seek one best way to do things, and find it difficult to delegate. They want to control the whole process, to infuse it with their high standards.
