Preface

Preface

An ideal human resource development model provides technical professionals with the skills necessary for success as a technical supervisor before they really need them. But research indicates that this is more the exception than the rule. Since this is true, the following three audiences will benefit from reading and using this book.

  1. Technical experts planning a transition to technical supervision. It is best to learn what to do before you actually have to do it.

  2. New technical supervisors. On-the-job training can be quite successful. Read this book within three months of becoming a technical supervisor.

  3. Experienced technical supervisors who have never received any formal training. Surprisingly, there are many technical supervisors who may have received “field promotions”—a bench scientist on Friday and a technical supervisor on Monday—who have not received any formal supervisory training. It is not too late to step back and learn “how to work smarter—not harder.”
