Chapter 13. Motivational Issues

A curious “motivational paradox” exists for technical supervisors. On one hand, individuals and organizations recognize the importance of high-quality environments that provide incentives for people to flourish. Many books-some mentioned in the bibliography—encourage supervisors to empower and motivate people, and manage for commitment, performance and productivity.

However, the workplace (particularly technology-driven organizations) is often chaotic, changing and fiercely competitive. In this organizational environment, the people side of the enterprise, the creating and sustaining of incentives for people to flourish, is too often neglected.
