Advance Your Career

Ultimately, you are responsible for advancing your career. It is always great to have a manager who takes a personal and professional interest in you. A clear organizational career path is also of assistance. But, you will have to take care of you.

  • Prioritize time to manage your career. Simply doing your job well does not assure success—become your own public relations agent.

  • Make sure that you are noticed. Your career will be significantly enhanced when senior managers are consistently observing your achievements.

  • Volunteer and nominate yourself. Step forward and suggest “I can do it.” Don’t wait for someone to discover how great you really are.

  • Get off the field when you don’t like the game. Too many technical experts have been railroaded, by themselves (for salary increases) or management (by necessity), into the role of supervisor. You may want to seek other career options when this describes you.
