Search Tools

There are millions of pages on the World Wide Web. How do you begin to find the information you're interested in? Various companies have developed programs that search the Web for the information you're looking for. Search Engine is the name commonly given to a number of different sites on the Internet which provide this service.

Search engines serve as a sort of automated reference librarian. Search engines will find pages on the Web based on keywords you provide. There are a variety of engines and tools to help you find what you're looking for. For example, AltaVista, Metacrawler, Lycos, Yahoo!, and many others, can help you find sites on the Web. Alta Vista searches the database that it maintains. Metacrawler, created at the University of Washington, is considered a metasearch engine. It queries eight different databases but does not maintain one of its own. The metasearch engines are typically a bit slower but will give search results based on multiple databases instead of only one.
