Complements

A complement is any word (or phrase) that completes a subject, object, or verb. A subject complement follows a linking verb and is used to rename or define the subject. For example, "A tarn is a small glacial lake."

An object complement follows or modifies a direct object and can be a noun or adjective. For example, "The players named Logan captain to keep him happy." In this example, the noun captain complements the direct object Logan; the adjective happy complements the direct object him.
