Sorting and Searching

Sorting the Data

Once you've added some records, you can begin tapping the power of the database management software (Figure 12-4). One of the first things you may want to do is to sort the database. Indexing and sorting capabilities allow you to rearrange all the records in a meaningful order. Let's say you want to sort the records alphabetically by last name. In this case, the "last name" field would be the key or primary field, the field that determines the sort order. The first name may be the secondary field, the field that determines the sort order in a case where two last names are identical.
