The BIOS

Unless you are a programmer and know how to write programming code that can communicate directly with the computer's hardware to perform a function, you need an operating system and software. The BIOS is installed in a read-only memory (ROM) chip on the computer's motherboard. The BIOS is the first thing that loads when your computer is started. These basic instructions test the computer to make sure it is operating properly and then recognize the various components including the CPU, memory, keyboard, monitor, and so forth.
