Part VII: Netiquette guidelines > Emoticons and abbreviations

Chapter 22. Emoticons and abbreviations

Explanation

E-mail recipients might find it difficult to determine a sender’s true intention because these messages lack intonation and facial expressions. Emoticons provide a way to express emotion in e-mail. Electronic abbreviations are common phrases that appear as abbreviations in e-mail messages. Although emoticons and abbreviations can be handy in certain situations, you should use them sparingly in professional e-mails. Many people find emoticons and phrase abbreviations irritating and unprofessional. In addition, some coworkers who are not familiar with these abbreviations might not understand your message. In some cases, emoticons and phrase abbreviations can even weaken your credibility.
