Chapter 19. Message management > Checking your e-mail

Checking your e-mail

How frequently you check your e-mail is a personal choice based on position and personality. You might want to check your e-mail in the morning to help you plan your day. Or, you might find that establishing your own priorities instead of scheduling your day based on information you find in your e-mail messages is the best way for you to organize your tasks.

When deciding the best time of the day to check your e-mail, you should remember that although these messages can seem compelling and urgent, you can decrease interruptions by reading them at scheduled times each day. For example, you might choose to check your e-mail mid-morning, after lunch, and again mid-afternoon. If your e-mail program has a bell that sounds to inform you when you have a new e-mail message, you can change the default setting on your terminal so that the bell does not sound, as shown in Exhibit 5-1.
