Family Unfriendly

IT has allowed alternative work arrangements and home offices to proliferate. Bravo! That provides the flexibility and control most people crave, and that's family-friendly. But eliminating the distinction between home and office, work and the personal can also be family-unfriendly.

When work is visibly the most important commitment in terms of how much time it's given and how it takes precedence, it can be extremely difficult for the people in your life to feel that they are really important. If work is the dominant passion, and much of it takes place at home, it increases the likelihood of psychological separateness despite physical closeness. That is as family-unfriendly as it gets.
