The Steps of Change

1.
Speak the unspeakable. Step up to the real major problems.

2.
Identify the business of the business, the strategy to win, and specific organizationwide goals and their due dates.

3.
Be extraordinarily clear about the organization's values and the behaviors that flow from them.

4.
Communicate the reasons for basic change, the hurdles to be faced, and the objectives of the business transformation.

5.
Create a line-of-sight from the organizationwide business goals to individual and unit performance targets with due dates.

6.
Identify thrivers, survivors, and strugglers. Select thrivers for decision-making roles.

7.
Fire trouble-making strugglers.

8.
Fire chronic nonperformers.

9.
Start again: Reassess business and people goals and issues.

This is a simple, direct, and focused process which asks, “Where are we and what impedes our ability to succeed? What do we need to do? Who are our potential leaders and who are the individuals who must change their attitudes and behaviors or be gotten rid of?” In its broad strokes, the process is as applicable to individuals as it is to organizations.
