Porous Boundaries

The glory of technology is the rise in productivity and the decline in unemployment that the United States experienced in the second half of the 1990s.[2] Economists had long concluded that an unemployment rate of less than five percent was inflationary. The fact that the unemployment rate ranged from 3.9 percent to 4.9 percent (and 2.4 percent to 3.7 percent in San Diego)[3] without any inflation was attributed to increased employee productivity. The technology-led rise in productivity was the root cause of the better standard of living that most middle-class Americans experienced.

IT liberates many people from boring tasks, which is wonderful. IT can also make life more convenient: We can read the news on the Internet, check live Doppler radar for the weather whenever we want, avoid traffic and crowds by shopping at home in a robe, or link with business colleagues in China and have our messages translated for us.
