Let's Have Fun!

Ferraris in borderless organizations put fun! first. That's moving the needle. But, they also want fun; they want to play with the people with whom they work. For them, the dividing line between work and play is permeable, which is pretty extraordinary. If you play with people it means you enjoy them, you trust them, and you see them as friends and colleagues rather than as enemies and competitors. That's very different from what you find in most large, stable organizations in which there's an unstated but neverending competition between people who are elbowing each other, vying for recognition and promotions.

There is also a serious side to the fun in borderless companies. Borderless conditions are exhausting as well as exhilarating. They're stressful as well as successful. They're out of control as well as in the money. When conditions are tense, people try to make themselves feel better. They turn to commitments that are supportive like their families and they may try to create a sense of fun and of belonging within a community at work.
