Composing Your Image

Image composition refers to the arrangement of items in your photo. Is the person or flower or building directly in the center of the photo, or is it artfully arranged with other components in the scene? Is the person looking straight at the camera or gazing thoughtfully into the distance?

Don't get me wrong, a centered image of a person looking straight into the lens can be artful. But the cameras we have in mind for this book are a bit limited in the creative department. Control over aperture (the size of the lens opening), for example, is not typically available for cameras in this price range. While no substitute for an M.F.A. in photography (or even a class in creative photography at a community college or a community center), I have a few tips to help you take more interesting photos.
