A Digital SL-What?

There are two popular types of digital cameras on the market for amateur photographers: the point-and-shoot and the digital SLR.

The term point-and-shoot is a bit misleading—it's used to refer to any compact camera without interchangeable lenses. Point-and-shoot was a marketing term coined by someone at a camera company who noticed that most people with compact cameras don't take the time to compose their shots. These customers wanted a camera that could just be aimed toward the subject and could capture a picture at the press of a button, unencumbered by dials or switches.
