In case you put the book down for a break, we just discussed how the shutter covers up a hole through which light strikes the digital sensor. Now we're going to talk about the hole that the shutter is covering.

Inside every camera is a small arrangement of overlapping panels that open and close in the shape of a circle. Like a deck of playing cards fanned out and stacked on top of one another, this hole changes shape to allow more or less light into the camera.
