Some Light Filing

The all-in-one programs like iPhoto and Photoshop Album allow you to browse your images visually (so they are called browsers), and they also allow you to search for keywords that you can assign to them after you import them. Their ability to search through EXIF or IPTC data is a bit limited, however, and this is one of the reasons why some people turn to separate programs to handle the different parts of the workflow.

Cataloging programs usually combine a browser with the ability to perform complex searches on filenames, IPTC data, EXIF information, and more. They can usually create albums of images and enable you to share them with others (see Chapter 7). They use a database of information on the files to allow you to quickly perform complex searches.
