Compose Yourself

Since the dawn of time, human beings have had a pretty good idea about what makes up good composition. Without a doubt, as prehistoric humans painted scenes in the caves of Lascaux depicting the day's hunt using nothing but hand-ground pigments, someone came up to them and said, “The deer would look better over there.”

You can tell right away when something looks bad, though you might not be able to put your finger on exactly why it doesn't appeal to you. For ages people have studied composition, looking for rules that would give artists guidelines for creating artwork that looks right. But those rules remain elusive.
