Getting the most out of your desktop printer

Having a document professionally printed can be a costly endeavor that many small businesses and individuals simply can't afford. That doesn't mean there aren't other options available. More and more people have opted for printing small order business cards, brochures, and marketing materials in-house. With the plethora of desktop printers currently on the market, there's a model suited for everyone. Putting some extra thought into the process of picking out your desktop model, and then taking the time to get to know your printer, will reap long-term benefits.

One dot at a time

Primarily, the three most popular types of printers used in the home and small office are inkjet, laser, and solid ink printers. Although the ink source is different, they all print using fine dots to create halftone patterns, which produce the illusion of tone and/or color, as shown in Figure A.
