Chapter 8. Organizing and Archiving Your Images > Renaming digital camera files

Renaming digital camera files

Applications: Adobe Photoshop 7/CS, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2

Digital cameras usually number images sequentially, which has the main benefit of never having two files with the same name. However, does DSCN5067.jpg tell you what the image looks like? Or when you took it? There are some digital cameras that allow greater control over the naming of your files as they're being captured, but you're much more likely to rename your files to make some sense out of them once they're downloaded. By knowing what information you want to collect from a filename, you can create a naming convention that makes it easy to find the right shot. And, by thinking ahead, you can save time by renaming large numbers of files at once.
