Chapter 6. Improving Image Quality While... > Achieving balance in your images

Achieving balance in your images

Sometimes a photograph can be a decent representation of the subject the photographer is trying to capture, but it distinctly lacks drama. One of the main causes of this problem is an unbalanced image. The concept of balance is a major aspect of good photographic composition and can help transform an average shot into an exceptional image. Understanding some simple concepts of balance will help improve the quality of the images you take with your digital camera.

Balance and image composition

In photography, balance is the relationship between your main subject and the other elements in the image, such as background, props, surroundings, and other subject matter. A majority of images employ one central subject—how that subject sits in the given space and interacts with other objects in the scene creates balance. The human mind seeks out balance, so an image with a sense of equilibrium draws and maintains our ever-shifting attention. By using balance, a good photographer delivers a clear message in a visually stimulating way.
