Chapter 6. Improving Image Quality While... > Adjusting the direction of light

Adjusting the direction of light

The availability of light in a scene is always important, but of equal significance is the direction that light is coming from. While light intensity influences the exposure levels in your scene, where that light originates also has a dramatic influence on the contrasts, details, and overall presentation of your scene. Light direction defines the shape of your object and creates shadows to add depth. By understanding how light direction affects your scene, you can improve your images and ensure that you set your digital camera properly to avoid underexposed shadow areas or overexposed highlights.

Use the quality of light

The quality of light in a scene is a combination of direction, intensity, and color. When shooting in a studio, you have complete control over these factors, but most of the time you're shooting in natural settings where evaluating the available ambient light is crucial to selecting your camera position and adjusting your exposure settings.
