Part: Three The Digital Darkroom > Building a Digital Darkroom

Chapter Eight. Building a Digital Darkroom

The darkroom is where the photographic image is transformed from a mere photograph into a masterpiece. With film photography, the process involves working with a variety of chemicals and changing the exposure and contrast of the light-sensitive paper in order to interpret the image in a variety of ways. Using an enlarger, the photographic paper can be selectively blocked to dodge (lighten) or exposed to burn (darken). The photographer can vary the timing of both exposure and development to achieve the desired result, or use contrast filters when exposing the paper, to create effects ranging from the subtle to the dramatic.
