Chapter Twelve. From Capture to Monitor ... > The Importance of Color Management

The Importance of Color Management

Color management is a critical aspect of digital imaging because it provides the tools to produce predictable, accurate, consistent, and repeatable output, whether on a monitor, on the printed page, or in a gallery exhibit. When you spend time and effort getting your image just right, you want the final display to present exactly what you intend the viewer to see. Color management provides a way to achieve this goal while cutting down on test prints, wasted media, and frustration.

Each device that deals with your image has its own unique characteristics. Every monitor and printer displays color differently. Color management enables you to bridge the differences between these device, through the use of profiles, which describe the color behavior of a device so that color can be reproduced accurately. (See the “Profiles” section later in this chapter.)
