Chapter One. Why Digital?

Photography is not just f-stops, shutter speeds, camera optics, and film formats and even in this book, photography is not about pixels, sensors, media cards, or software. Photography is experience, exploration, expression, and communication. Whether you pick up a film or digital camera, photography is about seeing more clearly and sharing your vision with others. Sadly, we often (and this includes all three coauthors of this book) forget this essential fact as we get excited over a new digital camera or an update to a favorite piece of software that we can't wait to test-drive. Of course we love the feel of a new camera or lens, but we believe it's important to keep in mind that photography is a very personal expression, and each time you raise a camera to your eye and frame an image, you are really taking a picture of yourself, as mirrored in your point of view, your framing, and your composition.
