A Brief History of Photography

The history of photography can actually be dated as far back as classical Greece, when it was noted that a box with a small hole on one side produced an image on the inside of the opposite wall. Of course, there was no way to record the image, so it was a curious optical trick with no practical application. In the 16th century, Italian artists used this effect to construct the camera obscura. This “camera” was a small hut with a hole in one wall. It produced an image on the opposite wall, where an artist could hang a sheet of paper and trace the projected image.
