Chapter 5. Store and Transfer Your Photos > Connect to Your Computer

Connect to Your Computer

The best method for connecting your digital camera to your computer is with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port. USB connections are fast and easily configured. Not all cameras offer a USB connection, however. Some require a serial port. Serial ports have a slower data transfer rate than USB ones. If a serial connection is your only option, seriously consider getting a card reader. Card readers will give you a much faster transfer rate than a camera-to-serial port connection. (We cover card readers in Chapter 2.)

If your computer doesn't have a USB port, you can generally add one using a USB PCI card (for desktop computers) or PC Card (for laptops). These cards are generally inexpensive (under $40) and fairly easy to install.
