Chapter 7. Photos and File Types

Image files have different formats—and each format saves and archives information about that image differently. One picture, saved in two different formats, can look startlingly different. The result depends on each format's rules for interpreting image data.

If all you do with your digital photos is send them off for printing, you don't need to know about different file formats (also called file types). But if you plan to edit or resize them, or to use them for both printing and online display, a basic knowledge of file formats helps you avoid mistakes and maintain image quality.
