My image doesn't appear in my editing application's Open menu

If you're running Windows, you probably need to change the setting in your drop-down File Type menu to All Files. If you're using Mac OS X, perhaps your file is in a format that your editing software doesn't recognize. Look to see if your file has an extension (like .jpg or .tif) at the end of its name. (To see hidden extensions in OS X, select the file and choose File > Show.) If there's no extension to be found, try simply double-clicking the file to see if a different application launches. Once the file is open, you can go to most applications' Save As dialog box and see the listed file type, which should be the current one for the image.
