Chapter 6. Choosing Editing Software > Types of Editing Software

Types of Editing Software

Image-editing software falls into several distinct categories, and cost is only part of the picture.

At the low end are free, minimum-function, drop-and-crop programs connected to a photo-printing service. In the middle range are two types of software that have overlapping functions and are frequently confused with each other: image editors and photo editors. And at the high end are professional-level image and photo editors. Image editors are really paint and art programs that let you use photographic images as a starting point. Photo editors share many of the same tools—like brushes or sliders to change brightness and contrast—but arrange them differently. Photo editors frequently have one-button shortcuts for fixing common picture problems, while image editors give you the tools to make these changes but not the recipes for making them.
