Chapter 6. Choosing Editing Software > Why Do You Need Software?

Why Do You Need Software?

How perfect are you? Digital cameras make it easier to be a good photographer, because you can immediately see when a photo is really bad. But perfection is as elusive as ever, and never more so than when you're faced with a one-time photo opportunity. When the condor soars over your head in the Grand Canyon, you can't ask it to do a second flyby because you forgot to change your settings.

Only professional photographers can produce perfectly controlled situations for picture taking, and they use specialized add-ons, lighting, and models to do it. Most great pictures taken under other conditions have a heavy dose of luck involved. Anyone willing to count on pure luck probably doesn't want a digital camera in the first place. So why stop halfway, when you can use software to fix a photo that was shot in the wrong light, crop out that camera strap in the corner, and eliminate Betty's biker boyfriend from the wedding candids after she finally dumped him?
