Chapter 2. Buy Your Camera Gear > Price Comparison Shopping

Price Comparison Shopping

Now that some of digital photography's technical terms have been defined, you're ready to see what's available. The first question you have to answer when shopping for anything is “How much do I want to spend?” Digital cameras are available for as little as a hundred dollars and as much as several thousand.

Basic (under $500)

If you're going to use your digital camera for snapshots, such as family photos and vacation pictures, this is likely to be your price range. The resolution of cameras in this range will be 2 to 3 megapixels. You'll get quality pictures suitable for posting to a Web page or emailing to relatives, and prints of up to 4 x 6 (the size of a standard print from the drugstore). You probably won't get advanced features like manual control, but you can count on automatic exposure and focus, optical zoom, and preset controls for indoor/outdoor lighting.
