Chapter 6. Simple Retouching Techniques > Evening Out Highlights and Shadows

Evening Out Highlights and Shadows

As you learned in Chapter 4, “Tools for Adjusting Tones,” Photoshop has a variety of tools to help you adjust the tonal values in your images. In a typical image, some areas are too light, whereas others are too dark. Frequently, you can use the Levels command to adjust the tonal levels to a more satisfactory compromise. But, what do you do if the easiest to understand controls don’t work for you? Are you forced to master complex tools such as Curves to get what you need? Don’t panic just yet. There may be an easier way that gives you a bit of artistic control in the process. In this project, we’re going to work with the photo of the frangipani blossom shown in Figure 6.19. Can you spot the problems we need to address? Use the frangi.pcx photo on the CD-ROM if you want to work along with me.
