Painting Selections

If none of the previous selection tools suits you, Photoshop lets you paint a selection using Quick Mask mode. When you shift into Quick Mask mode, selected or nonselected areas (your choice) are represented by a tone, usually red. You can add or subtract from a selection by using painting and erasing tools, or even other selection tools. When you leave Quick Mask mode, the areas you’ve painted and erased are transformed into a selection.

Quick Mask mode can be used to create a mask from scratch, or to modify any existing selection. Here’s a quick run-down of how to use Quick Mask mode:
