Part I:: Mastering the Basics

Part I:: Mastering the Basics

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Carpenters know their tools.” That aphorism applies just as well to the art and craft of retouching and compositing. Simple knowledge of the mechanics of accomplishing something isn’t enough. You must also have the right tools and know how to use them. If not, your understanding of the mechanism behind image manipulation is just so much theory. Just as carpenters buy the best tools available, and spend many hours mastering their use during a lengthy apprenticeship, you need a high-quality, versatile set of tools (Photoshop) and should plan on spending time learning to use them proficiently.

Part I of this book is your apprenticeship with the toolbox of Adobe’s flagship image editor. The five chapters that follow explain the basics of retouching and compositing and show you how to use selection, cloning, tonal, and color tools, along with other essential capabilities such as working with layers. Then, we tackle more complex retouching and compositing projects in Parts II and III.
