Converting Color to Grayscale

I’m going to approach the color-to-grayscale question from a different angle than you’ll find in most Photoshop books, which means, I hope, that you’ll understand the problems better. Before we make our first conversion, I’m going to explain why the process is so difficult, using some visual examples to demonstrate.

Photoshop offers several ways to convert color images to grayscale. Several are fast, easy, and produce terrible results much of the time. Others take a little more time, but give you better results. I’m going to show you all the common ways to convert full-color images to black and white, and offer tips on which you should use and when. But first, it’s important to understand why removing all the color from an image doesn’t automatically yield a good grayscale version of the image.
