Creating n-tones

You probably think you know about duotones—images that incorporate several shades of the same color to create a monochrome image. You may even have some guesses about tritones, quadtones, and hexadecimaltones. They’re just more shades of the same color, right? You can use this technique to create sepia-toned, old-timey photographs, eh?

Ah, close but no cigar. First, duotones are not necessarily (or even frequently) images with two similar tones. Anyway, if all you wanted to do was create a brownish (or bluish, or whatever) image, you could do that with the Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation dialog box.
