Chapter 3. Cloning, Patching, and Healin... > Repairing Images with the Healing Br...

Repairing Images with the Healing Brush

The Healing Brush is the next logical evolutionary step after the Clone tool. As useful as the Clone tool is, there are two problems with it. The first problem is that the tool is rather stupid. You have to tell it how to do everything, from pointing out what spot to use as its origin to how to merge the pixels at the destination location.

The second problem is that the people using the Clone tool aren’t much smarter than the tool itself. We can make some guesses about what blending mode might merge the pixels most effectively. We can probably fiddle with Opacity settings to avoid completely obscuring all detail in the destination, if that’s what we want. But, all in all, the Clone tool is useful but inelegant.
