Images in the Digital Domain

Photoshop CS and its stablemates, such as Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe InDesign CS, make up a powerful creative suite of programs. As you probably already know, that’s where the CS in the name came from: Creative Suite. There’s so much power in Photoshop CS that if you’re a photographer and don’t use all the tools it has to offer, you’re putting a crimp in your creativity, and seriously restricting your flexibility. For the devoted photographer, both amateur and professional, not using Photoshop is like limiting yourself to a single lens, using only one film, or using a digital camera exclusively in fully automatic mode.

Certainly, some incredible images have been created by photographers who work under mindboggling limitations (a few ingenious pictures taken with pinhole cameras come to mind). For example, one of the photos shown in Figure 1.1 was taken with a $3,000 “professional” camera, using studio lighting equipment priced at another grand or two. The other photo was taken with a $50 point-and-shoot camera and a flashlight.
