Chapter 1. Getting Started with Photoshop CS > Inserting Images in a Document

Inserting Images in a Document

You can use Photoshop's Place command to insert artwork into an open document. To increase your control of the new image information, Photoshop always places the new image into a separate layer. Photoshop lets you place files in the PDF, Adobe Illustrator, and EPS formats. Since Photoshop is primarily a raster program, when you place a PDF, Illustrator, or EPS file, Photoshop automatically rasterizes the file information (converts the vector into pixels). Which means you cannot edit the placed documents as you would a vector shape or path. In addition, the placed document will be rasterized at the resolution of the current active document.
