Mastering Illustrator

Checking the Layers Palette

Simple rectangles and ellipses are showing up on the artboard with all sorts of unexpected looks. What's going on?

Open Illustrator's Layers palette and take a look. If the layer upon which you're creating the objects has a small filled circle to the right of its name, appearance characteristics have been targeted on the layer. You can click the New Layer button to create an untargeted layer and create on it. (Targeting appearances to layers is discussed in Chapter 30.)
