Relatively Speaking

I'm a little confused by all the layers lingo and how layers are arranged.

When we discuss the relative order of layers, we're talking about the stacking order. Think of the layers as pieces of paper—or, perhaps better, sheets of transparent plastic. When these sheets are placed on top of each other, it's easy to determine which is on top. If you draw on each sheet of plastic and stack the sheets, artwork on an upper sheet might block artwork on a lower sheet. Moving a sheet below another one changes which artwork hides other artwork.
