Chapter 27. Type and Text in Illustrator > Illustrator's Type Tools

Illustrator's Type Tools

The Type tool (default keyboard shortcut T) has six variations. You can choose from horizontal and vertical versions of three different functions. In addition to inserting new text, you can use the type tools to select text that is already present in the document. Click and drag with a type tool to select all or part of a section of text. After you select the text, you can edit the type or change its attributes.

Type Tool and Vertical Type Tool

The type tools place horizontal and vertical type at any point in a document. Select the tool in the Toolbox and click once anywhere on the artboard to begin entering type. If the point where you need to place text is already occupied by an object, lock or hide that object in the Layers palette to prevent it from being converted to a type container. (Type containers are discussed later in this chapter.)
