Chapter 27. Type and Text in Illustrator > Understanding, Adding, and Fixing Fo...

Understanding, Adding, and Fixing Fonts

Many types of fonts are available today, in various qualities. Illustrator, like most high-end computer programs, works best with high-quality fonts. Although you can get good results with inexpensive and free fonts, they are often problematic. TrueType and Type 1 fonts are the most common high-quality fonts available today, with more and more OpenType fonts reaching the marketplace.

Fonts (also called typefaces) that are classified as TrueType, Type 1, or OpenType typically perform flawlessly with Illustrator. (Any font, however, is subject to corruption over time and may need to be reinstalled.) You can use bitmap fonts, but they don't use all of Illustrator's capabilities and they may not print properly.
