Mastering Photoshop

Third-Party Filters

Are the built-in filters that come with Photoshop the only filters there are?

Heck no! Way back when, Photoshop created a plug-in architecture for its filters that allowed a cottage industry of independent software companies to emerge and add even more filters and plug-ins than Photoshop has natively. There are literally hundreds of filters and plug-ins that do everything from performing highly controlled unsharp masking to adding edge effects, to employing advanced color correction, to adding bear fur to images, to…well, you name it. Some popular makers of Photoshop filters include A Lowly Apprentice Productions (ALAP), Alien Skin, AutoFX, Corel, Extensis, Flaming Pear, LizardTech, Right Hemisphere, and many, many more. A good resource is Plug-Ins World, found at www.pluginsworld.com, which has overviews of tons of Photoshop filters and plug-ins, with links to software vendor sites. And remember, many plug-in vendors let you download free demo versions of filters, so you can try them to see if you like them before committing money to them.
