Service Bureaus, Print Brokers, and Printers

A graphic artist must do several things to prepare artwork for commercial printing. Some of the other steps, however, may be best left to others. In some cases, one individual serves as designer, artist, and prepress specialist. Understanding who is responsible for what steps, and communicating about those steps, is often the key to successfully completing a project.

Service Bureaus

It would be lovely if you had a huge budget and an office equipped with the latest and greatest machinery, ready and waiting for any project that comes along. Unfortunately, the reality is that budgets are usually tight, or at least realistic. Spending tens of thousands of dollars for a piece of equipment that you might use only a few times a year is not efficient. Hiring out that particular piece of work a couple of times a year is usually far more practical.
