Creating imagery on paper with inks placed by an offset press is part art and part science. It's also part preparation and part faith. As the artist or illustrator, you create the work and perhaps place it into a page layout document. From there, it's transferred into the capable hands of the print shop for processing and the actual printing. The more you understand about what happens after the file leaves your hands, the better you can prepare it before it's sent out.
