Defining Custom Brushes and Brush Sets

To take full advantage of Photoshop's paint engine, you need to use custom brushes. You can load existing sets of brushes into the Brushes palette, or you can create your own.

Defining a Custom Brush

Photoshop's menu command Edit, Define Brush creates a custom brush from artwork you designate. The brush itself is always grayscale, so it's best to either work in Grayscale mode or desaturate your colored artwork (Image, Adjustments, Desaturate). If the artwork for the brush tip is alone on the layer, you need only use the Edit, Define Brush command. If there is other artwork on the layer, isolate the brush tip with a selection. You can define a brush on a layer filled with white or a background layer, and you can use irregularly shaped and feathered selections to define brushes.
