Blending Modes, One by One

Photoshop now offers a total of 31 blending modes. Some, such as Dissolve, are almost always available. Other blending modes are used for one specific purpose, such as Replace for the Healing Brush and Pass Through for layer sets. The blending modes are presented here generally in the order in which they appear in menus. (Remember that not all blending modes appear in all menus.) Photoshop groups the blending modes according to general effect.

Most of the layer blending modes are shown with a sample image consisting of a background and seven additional layers (see Figure 18.13). For each example, all of the seven additional layers are set to the blending mode under discussion, and in each case the opacity is set to 100%.
